That's a nice spades hand
That’s a nice spades hand

(Opening scene) Four guys dressed in Army fatigues in the middle of nowhere sit at a small table crudely fashioned from MRE boxes talking and playing cards; spades is the game. They are telling stories, talking smack, laughing, and learning about each other. They are forming bonds of brotherhood that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Unfortunately this scene is a relic of a bygone era that got edited out of the celluloid by Steve Jobs and left lying on the cutting room floor. Replace the cards with an iPod, iPhone or iPad. Replace conversation with 40GB of MP3 digital music pumped through $300 Beats by Dre. Replace the brotherly bonds and fond memories with high scores, texts, email, online shopping, face book updates, and tweets. Now you have a scene that depicts today’s soldier, what I call the iSoldier. After a quick search I found that there is already a product out called “iSoldier” and, ironically, it is a small plastic army soldier that acts as a smart phone stand.
